I’ve gained a new appreciation for living day to day recently. I like to think I’m a pretty organized guy (even though my desk might say something different). I like to know when things are and try to figure out the big picture and the long view so I can best take care of the details. Through a number of events in lives of those close to me as well as in some of the reading I’ve been doing, I’ve been reminded of God’s sovereignty over our plans.
I’ve seen people’s plans change drastically and unexpectedly. A young mother dies with no warning. A job offer that comes out of the blue, or a job that disappears with no warning. An unexpected surprise or gift even. I think I’m in a period of my life where God’s teaching me to hold things a bit more loosely – not that I shouldn’t plan, but that I should be ready to go with the flow when the spirit is leading that flow. It’s cool.. but hard. Western culture doesn’t like non-planning, or worse, interruptions of good plans. Regardless of what culture likes, it seems that life favors those who understand that God’s in control.
James 4:13-15 (NASB – it’s the Bible I’ve got beside me right now)
“Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit.” Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that.”
